While I have a strong assurance of my peace with God, the peace of God is something that I often struggle to preserve in my daily life. In recent years, it has become even more difficult as my career path has developed since leaving the relative security of my hometown and university campus at age 22.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a writer, but by God’s providence, I had difficulty securing the dream journalism job after graduation. Instead, I accepted a job as an executive assistant to a CFO at a non-profit ministry in Atlanta. This was the first step leading me to a career in finance and accounting. One assignment at a time, my job moved from editing correspondence to financial responsibilities. Over the years I have felt like a fish out of water, and a common response to tasks has been that I may not know how to complete it at the moment, but I will figure it out. And I usually do. While I have been able to push through the unknown in my career, I still often struggle with persistent anxiety.
Anxiety is not just the absence of peace; it is deeply rooted from not trusting God.
In his book, Anxious for Nothing, Max Lucado writes, “Anxiety is trepidation. It’s a suspicion, an apprehension. Life in a minor key with major concerns. Perpetually on the pirate ship’s plank.”
Anxiety barrages a person with what-ifs. What if I don’t meet the deadline? What if I don’t get my dream job? What if I fail? How in the midst of these anxiety-laden questions can one find peace?
Living in the peace of God is an on-going process for all believers.
Priscilla Shirer writes in her book Armor of God that God’s peace is an inner tranquility and calmness of the soul. She describes two stages of peace that are important to understand: peace with God and peace of God. Peace with God comes at the point of salvation when a person is reconciled to God through faith in Jesus Christ. In Jesus, we have peace with God. As Romans 5:1 says, “Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us.”
Positionally, we have peace with God through faith in Jesus Christ, and as a result, functionally, we can experience the peace of God. The peace of God is a moment by moment rest and assurance in God regardless of circumstances. Isaiah 26:3 says, “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in You, all whose thoughts are fixed on You!” Then Colossians 3:15 says, “And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.”
Do you struggle to live in the peace of God moment by moment? When anxiety rears its ugly head, take your thoughts captive to Christ and trust God. Trust that you have all that you need in Him and He works all things together for your good. Rejoice in the Lord and ask Him to help you. Give thanks. Thank Him for how He has blessed you. Then you will experience the peace of God that surpasses all understanding. Trust, thanksgiving, and peace are tied together by God’s grace.
God did not intend for His children to be plagued by anxiety. I am thankful that God is still working in me to practice trusting Him, to give thanks, and to experience His incredible peace.
